Enjoy Nature Along The Snowy High Line Canal

Posted: December, 15, 2020 | Categories: Events

With access to a long trail winding 71 miles through and beyond the Solstice community, it’s easy to enjoy the ultimate Colorado lifestyle. This season experience the wonder of winter and connect with nature by strolling the gorgeous High Line Canal. Read on to discover exciting activities you and your family can do together along the way.

Birdwatching

Wrap up in your winter gear, grab a pair of binoculars, and hit the trail in search of birds that favor Colorado throughout the winter. Consider making a checklist of the winged wonders you hope to spot and take along a journal to document your sightings and compare notes with your fellow amateur ornithologists. While strolling the High Line Canal, keep your eye on the sky for local favorites like the American dipper and brown-capped rosy-finch — which are known for their captivating songs and pinkish hues.

Geocaching

A quintessentially 21st century nature walk activity, geocaching requires the use of a GPS or a downloadable app on your smartphone. Using a free account, the tech will guide you to popular caches according to your location. You’ll be able to sign the virtual guestbook and share your experience with others who have visited or plan to visit that particular point of interest this winter. You and the kiddos will hone your exploration and discovery skills while learning about the nature that exists in your own backyard — to ensure the best experience, find your nearest trailhead and map your route before you go.

Photography

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced photographer, the High Line Canal is a sublime spot to practice your hobby. Choosing the right camera lens and identifying the best times of day to snap your shots will help you develop your artistic eye. During the chilly months you can capture the wintry whites, sparkly silvers, and brilliant blues that create a true Colorado color palette. Encourage your kids to identify and photograph the fantastic flora and fauna that thrive along the trail. After your artistic walk, share your favorite shots of chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and other critters with us on Instagram

Before heading out, make the most of your adventure by checking for trail closures. Don’t forget to slather on sunscreen and take your water bottle to stay hydrated — even though it’s cold! You’ll love wandering the High Line Canal just minutes from your home at Solstice to snap a few photos, spot dozens of birds, and connect with nature on a cool and sunny winter day.
